The Closing Prayer

The Last Supper is over. Jesus has finished washing the apostles' feet. He has encouraged them by explaining that their hearts do not need to be troubled. He will show them the way to heaven where a home is prepared for them. He has encouraged them to stay close to Him. If they abide in Him He will be like a vine that provides nourishment to them each day. He has promised them the Holy Spirit to lead them during the dark days ahead and to lead them to all truth. He has warned them about falling away and let them know that if they stay faithful their joy will be complete. He has assured them that He will overcome the world.

Now He offers a special prayer to enable then to go forward and face the challenges of the crucifixion. It is a personal and touching prayer spoken by a loving leader and friend. His prayer assures them that He has authority to provide them with eternal life. He assures them of protection from Satan's power. They are completely surrounded by God's love and the love of Christ as they face their challenges. He reminds them of their mission; they have been sent into he world to tell the world the truth of Christ.

As He closes the prayer Jesus reminds them of the tremendous importance of unity. As God's men they must be one in their faith and in their service to Christ. They must be one in their commitment to the truth of God's word. And they must be one in the dedication they have to complete their mission.
